Grey Areas

As we get further along in January everything gets back to normal and we get back into our daily and weekly routines. Today we started back at Watermark’s Women’s Bible Study and man it felt good to be back.

Today we dove back into 1 Corinthians and studied chapter 8. There was a lot of great information covered in this chapter including discussion about idols, knowledge vs. love and grey areas. I want to share with you 5 questions to ask yourself when you come to grey areas in your life. We all encounter these “grey areas” and they are hard to figure out because they aren’t cut and dry.

  1. Does it glorify God?
  2. Does it build me up?
  3. Does it cause me to doubt?
  4. Doe it cause a fellow believer to stumble?
  5. Does it enslave me?

Does it glorify God? 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. “

Does it build me up?1 Corinthians 10:23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. “

Does it cause me to doubt? Romans 14:23 “But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.”

Does it cause a fellow believer to stumble? 1 Corinthians 8:12-13 “When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.”

Does it enslave me? 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

I thought these were really simple questions to ask yourself when facing a grey area in your life. We all face them on a regular basis and wish there was some sort of rule book for these scenarios. A few other points that were made today that I really liked and want to share with you are:

  • If you think it’s wrong then it is wrong for you
  • Just because you CAN doesn’t mean you SHOULD
  • When in doubt, cut it out
